The Monographपरिचय Overview

pakmag.net lists this song with its full opening — 'Ham do jeevan sathi, sonay kay pankh lagayen' — and gives it the fullest credits of any number in the film: Zeenat Begum and S. D. Batish as the singers, Zahir Kashmiri as the poet, Pandit Amarnath as composer. It is the score's companionship duet, the point at which the film's song sequence turns from courtship toward a shared future.
The Music

The pairing of voices is the informative part, because both were people Pandit Amarnath worked with by choice. Zeenat Begum's voice in the mid-1940s was plain, forward and untheatrical — the Lahore sound, closer to folk delivery than to the ornamented Bombay style. S. D. Batish, born in Patiala and classically trained, had already sung for Amarnath in Daasi (1944) and sang for him again the same year in Kaise Kahoon, though which number there is his is itself disputed between the catalogues. A duet written for those two would have been built as an alternating line-for-line exchange rather than as harmony, since Hindi film scoring of 1945 had no vocabulary for two voices singing together as one; no disc has been located, so nothing beyond that structural expectation is asserted.
The Poetry

Zahir Kashmiri, whom pakmag.net credits with this lyric and whom the film's own credits list among its three poets, gives the couple a line that is not a love declaration but a plan. 'Hum do jeevan saathi' names the relationship in the plainest Hindi available — two companions for the length of a life, a formulation with no romance in it, only duration — and then 'sone ke pankh lagayen' supplies the flight: let us fit ourselves with wings of gold. Golden wings are a double-edged image in Urdu poetry, promising escape and warning of the weight of gold in the same breath, and in a film whose other songs include the breaking of a life's dream, the promise almost certainly sets up its own reversal.
The Story

Ragini was directed by Shankar Mehta for Maheshwari Pictures, Lahore, from an M. R. Kapur screenplay, with Smriti Biswas and Najm-ul-Hassan in the leads. No plot survives, so where this duet fell in the film cannot be stated; what can be said is that it is one of only two songs in the ten-song list for which pakmag.net records both singers, and one of four for which it records a poet. The other Zeenat Begum–Batish duet in the film is the garden song listed as 'Mujhe Chun Ne De'.
The Legacy

The two singers ended up on opposite sides of two borders. Zeenat Begum settled in Pakistan after 1947; S. D. Batish stayed in India, sang through the 1950s, and in 1970 moved to California, where he spent his last decades teaching Indian music at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Their composer did not outlive the film by two years. The song itself has no known reissue and no recovered disc.

pakmag.net records a full set of credits — both singers, the poet and the composer — for only two of Ragini's ten songs: this one and 'Mujhe Chun Ne De'. The Hindi Film Geet Kosh records no singer for either.

Zahir Kashmiri is one of the film's three credited lyricists, and this is the only song of the ten for which any source attaches his name individually.

S. D. Batish sang for Pandit Amarnath in Daasi (1944) — three songs, per hindigeetmala and Batish's own filmography — and pakmag.net puts him on two more in Ragini, a year before the composer's death in 1947.
