हिंदुस्तान हमारा

'Hindustan Hamara' is the patriotic number in Bachpan's ten-song score, and its title does the whole work of the genre in two words: the country, and the possessive claim on it. S. N. Tripathi composed it to I. C. Kapoor's lyric. Nothing further about the recording was set down — no singer credit survives, no disc transfer is known to circulate — so what can honestly be said about it is the title, the credits, and the year it was made in.

What can be said about the music is the composer and the constraint. S. N. Tripathi, trained at Bhatkhande's Morris College in Lucknow and a Bombay Talkies orchestra violinist before he began composing, was writing here in his fourth year as an independent music director. The song had to be a single 78-rpm side, roughly three minutes, which in the 1940s pushed patriotic numbers toward a march-adjacent regularity and a refrain built for group repetition. Beyond that, nothing about this recording's arrangement, key, tempo or voicing was documented, and none is asserted here.

Bachpan was in production in early 1945 and reviewed in mid-1946 — the exact span of the INA trials at the Red Fort, the end of the war, and the negotiations that led to Partition and independence. A film song titled with a first-person-plural claim on the country was not neutral material in that window: nationalist content on screen passed through a colonial censorship apparatus, and lyricists learned to write patriotism that could be read as sentiment about the land rather than as a political demand. It is also worth noting that the phrase was already circulating as a film title — B. Nandrekar, who plays the schoolteacher in Bachpan, had appeared in a 1940 feature called Hindustan Hamara. No text of this lyric has been located, so nothing is claimed here about what it actually says.

Bachpan was made by Homi Wadia's Basant Pictures, a studio then known for Fearless Nadia stunt pictures, and it is a social family drama instead: Bhairav (Mazhar Khan), embittered and living alone on a mountainside after his son married outside their caste, is slowly softened by Madhu (Baby Madhuri), the young niece a relative sends to live with him. Madhu is twice abducted — once by the aunt, who sells her as a companion to the wealthy invalid Kamla (Baby Shakuntala), and once by Kamla's jealous governess — and the film ends with the village schoolteacher Ramesh (B. Nandrekar) and his beloved (Chandraprabha) clearing Bhairav's name at the police station. I. C. Kapoor wrote the story, the dialogue and all ten song lyrics; S. N. Tripathi composed the score.

No transfer of this recording is known to circulate, and the song has no presence in the standard patriotic-song repertoire that survived into the radio and reissue era — a repertoire dominated by a handful of titles from bigger films. Its interest is that it exists at all: a small studio best known for stunt spectacle putting a song called 'Hindustan Hamara' into a children's drama in 1945, two years before the country it names came into being.
