In EnglishThe one song of Ragini that still exists to be heard — Zeenat Begum alone, asking why the same pang keeps rising in the heart again and again.

The Monographपरिचय Overview

Listed by hindigeetmala under the short title 'Ek Hook Si Uthti Hai' and by the Hindi Film Geet Kosh under its longer opening phrase, this is the number from Ragini (1945) whose record has been recovered and written about at length, and one of the two for which the Hindi Film Geet Kosh confirms a singer: Zeenat Begum, solo. It is the score's lament, built as a question that is asked and never answered.
The Music

The song sits in the ghazal-derived register that Punjab-school composers used for grief: a slow, largely unornamented melodic line held over a sparse accompaniment, with the refrain returning at the end of every couplet so that the question is put again each time rather than developed. Amarnath writes it low and open for Zeenat Begum, whose voice in this period is plain and forward rather than decorated, and lets the sustained vowel at the end of each line hang for longer than the metre needs — the technical device that makes a recurring question sound like a recurring wound.
The Poetry

The poem is a sequence of 'why' questions with no addressee, which is what separates it from an ordinary complaint-ghazal: nobody is being blamed. Its images move outward from the body to the world — a pang that rises in the chest without a cause, eyes that have been strung with an unbroken thread of tears, the world keeping mourning for its own desires, hope carried out like a bier, a nest already burnt, and lightning that keeps returning to the same garden. The organising idea is repetition itself: everything in the poem happens 'again and again', and the grief is located not in any single loss but in the fact that it will not stop recurring. Period listings differ on who wrote it — pakmag.net credits Mela Ram Wafa, while the HFGK-based account records the lyricist as not known — so the attribution here is single-source and flagged.
The Story

Ragini was made at Maheshwari Pictures, Lahore, directed by Shankar Mehta and photographed by Harcharn Singh Kwatra, with Smriti Biswas and Najm-ul-Hassan leading and Pran in support. The film itself is lost — no print, no synopsis — so this record does double duty: it is a song, and it is the only direct evidence left of what the picture sounded like. Zeenat Begum was not a hired voice here but the composer's own find; the HFGK-based commentary calls her his main singer across many of his films, and Ragini is one of the several he scored in 1945 — the busiest year of a career that had barely two more in it.
The Legacy

Everything around this record moved fast after 1945. Its composer was dead within two years, at thirty-five, leaving Mirza Sahiban unfinished for Husnlal and Bhagatram to complete. Its singer went to Pakistan at Partition, as did the film's hero. The film disappeared entirely. That the song is discussed at all today is the work of the collector-archivists around the Hindi Film Geet Kosh, who located the disc and posted it with its credits — an example of how the surviving 78-rpm record, rather than the film, has become the primary document for the Lahore industry of the 1940s.

Margin Notes'

This is the best-documented song from Ragini (1945): its audio has been located and posted with a full commentary, and only one other number from the film — 'Uth Soye Huye Husn Tujhe' — can still be heard at all.

The sources disagree about the lyricist: pakmag.net names Mela Ram Wafa, the Hindi Film Geet Kosh leaves the song's lyricist column blank, and the HFGK-based post that carries the audio records the lyricist as simply 'not known'. hindigeetmala repeats the film's whole trio, which is not a per-song attribution.

Zeenat Begum was introduced by Pandit Amarnath himself; Sharad Dutt's profile of the composer records that after the success of Daasi (1944), whose chartbuster was 'Raatein Na Rahi Woh, Na Rahe Din Woh Hamare', he came to be known in the trade as 'Pandit Amarnath of Daasi fame'.
