The Monographपरिचय Overview

Catalogued in full as 'Tere Naina Hain Bam (Chakai Ke Chakdum)' and in short lists simply by its refrain, this is one of two songs in Amiree (1945) credited to Ranjit Roy, who also appears in the film's cast. No recording of it is known to be publicly available, and nothing beyond the title and the singer's name is documented — the lyricist, as with every song in this film, is unrecorded in the Hindi Film Geet Kosh.
The Music

No audio of this song has surfaced, so nothing can be said about the setting with confidence. What the title indicates is register rather than melody: a refrain built out of jingling nonsense syllables is, in 1940s Hindi film practice, almost always the mark of a comic or novelty number, sung fast and staged for laughs. Dakshina Mohan Tagore's two audible pieces from this score are light and thinly accompanied, which makes a brisk, percussion-led treatment plausible here, but that remains an inference and not a description.
The Poetry

The full catalogue title pairs a direct address to the beloved's eyes with the jingling refrain, which is the standard construction of the light flirtation song: a compliment in the line, a piece of pure sound in the hook. Beyond that the verse cannot be characterised, because no text of it is available in any consulted source and this project does not reproduce lyrics for songs of this period in any case. The absence is worth stating plainly: for six of Amiree's nine songs, the title is all that survives.
The Story

Ranjit Roy is listed both among Amiree's actors and as the credited singer of two of its songs. In a Calcutta production of 1945 that combination usually means an actor-singer performing his own numbers on camera rather than a playback artist dubbing for someone else — the older practice, still common in eastern-Indian studios at a time when Bombay had largely moved to playback. If that is what happened here, this song was almost certainly picturised on Roy himself.
The Legacy

The song has no documented afterlife. It was not among the two Amiree numbers that resurfaced online, it does not appear on any known reissue, and it is present in the modern record only as a line in a song catalogue. Entries like this are the ordinary condition of 1940s Hindi film music: of roughly ten songs per film across hundreds of films a year, the great majority exist today as titles alone.

Margin Notes

The song appears under two different titles in the catalogues — the full first line 'Tere Naina Hain Bam' and the refrain 'Chakai Ke Chakadum' — which is why some song lists of Amiree appear to contain an extra track.
