Detective Sherdil is a 2025 Hindi-language mystery comedy directed by Ravi Chhabriya, released on ZEE5 on June 20, 2025, with a runtime of 106 minutes. Set in Budapest, Hungary, the film follows the eponymous Detective Sherdil — an unorthodox, witty Indian investigator played by Diljit Dosanjh — as he is tasked with solving the murder of Pankaj Bhatti, a wealthy Indian-origin businessman. What begins as an apparent hate crime evolves into a layered conspiracy involving eccentric suspects, hidden scams, and old grievances within the Indian diaspora community in Budapest. Sherdil's idiosyncratic methods — including a recurring harmonica motif — and his partnership with Natasha (Diana Penty) drive the investigation to an unexpected resolution. The supporting ensemble includes Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah, and Chunky Panday. Critics offered mixed reviews: while Dosanjh's charismatic presence was universally praised, reviewers noted a weak screenplay, a deafening background score used to compensate for lazy writing, and a mystery that failed to generate genuine suspense. IMDb rating: 5.1.

Detective Sherdil is effectively a score-driven film. Composer Joel Joe Crasto provides a background score notable for a catchy harmonica theme that recurs throughout, though critics noted it was used excessively — sometimes to cover for thin writing. One rap number appears in the film's opening sequence (introducing the detective character with the line 'Sherlock and Bakshi could never compare!'), but it was not released as a standalone single or soundtrack album. No formal song album was issued.

Detective Sherdil is notable primarily as Diljit Dosanjh's OTT original vehicle — a ZEE5 mystery comedy set in Budapest among the Indian diaspora, an unusual international location for Hindi genre cinema. Joel Joe Crasto's harmonica-driven score, while criticised for overuse, gave the film its most distinctive audio identity. The film's setting among Budapest's Indian diaspora community reflects a growing Hindi cinema interest in non-traditional international locations beyond London and New York.

Detective Sherdil received mixed critical reception (IMDb 5.1), with Dosanjh's charismatic performance universally praised but the screenplay widely found lacking. No formal soundtrack album meant the film could not leverage music for audience discovery, limiting its reach beyond initial ZEE5 subscribers. The film occupies a minor place as an OTT footnote in Diljit Dosanjh's filmography — a platform experiment that underdelivered on a capable lead's potential. Joel Joe Crasto's harmonica motif remains the film's most distinctive element.
