विश्वनाथबुवा जाधव

Vishwanathbuwa Jadhav (1885–1964) was a Hindustani classical khyal singer of the Kirana gharana who is remembered in film history as the music director of Gangavataran (1937), Dadasaheb Phalke's only sound film and the last film the father of Indian cinema ever made. Born in Hupari in the Kolhapur region, Jadhav first trained under Nissar Hussain Khan of the Gwalior gharana (1906–1910) before becoming a devoted disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, the founder of the Kirana gharana, learning from him from 1910 until the Ustad's death in 1937. In the 1920s Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj appointed him a court musician of Kolhapur State — the same princely patronage circle that produced Kolhapur Cinetone, the studio behind Gangavataran, for which Jadhav set some seventeen songs. Maharaja Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV of Mysore conferred on him the title 'Proudh Gandharva' in 1936, and he also scored the mythological film Dhruva Kumar (1938). Through his friendship with Dinanath Mangeshkar, he briefly taught the young Lata Mangeshkar in Sangli. His three sons became classical singers, and a memorial committee in his name preserves around five hundred bandish notations from his guru's lineage.
