The Monographजीवनी Biography

"Siddiqui / Zia Sarhadi" is a joint lyric credit from Kokila (1937), a Sagar Movietone social drama directed by Sarvottam Badami with music by Anil Biswas. Film records credit the film's songs to Siddiqui — an actor who also appears in Kokila's cast — while noting that Zia Sarhadi wrote additional songs for it; the song-by-song distribution between the two writers was never documented, which is why the two names are listed together against these songs. Zia Sarhadi (1914–1997), the better known of the pair, was Sagar Movietone's staff writer and lyricist in the 1930s: he wrote the story, dialogue and songs of Manmohan (1936), contributed to Mehboob Khan's Deccan Queen (1936), and went on to direct the socially conscious classics Hum Log (1951) and Footpath (1953) before migrating to Pakistan. Of the Sagar actor-lyricist Siddiqui, by contrast, little is documented beyond his screen appearances for the studio and this lyric credit — contemporary reviews of Kokila mention his performance alongside Motilal, but his full name and later career have not survived in accessible records.
