The Monographपरिचय Overview

Third in hindigeetmala's listing for the film and sixth in myswar's, 'Mann Baitha Hai' is one of the four non-patriotic titles among the six songs. Both catalogues carry it with no singer, no lyricist and no audio. It is registered here because the catalogues register it; nothing further about it is documented.
The Music

Nothing about how this song actually sounded can be stated. No recording is in circulation — hindigeetmala's page for the track carries no audio and no video — and the score's authorship is itself unsettled: Wikipedia's HFGK-derived index of 1945 Hindi films gives the film's music to the director Debaki Bose himself, while Moviebuff credits Anupam Ghatak, the Bengali composer who co-scored Champa the same year. What is documented is the setting the song was made in. This was a Hindi picture produced in Calcutta in 1945, at Indrapuri Productions, in the years when Bose was working outside New Theatres, the studio that had made his name; myswar's listing for the album names Columbia Records as the label the songs were issued on. Beyond that the record is silent, and this entry does not fill the silence in.
The Poetry

The idiom in the title is a physical one. 'Mann baith gaya' or 'mann baitha hai' does not translate as sadness so much as as a settling or sinking — the mind sitting down, losing its lift, the way a body drops when it stops holding itself up. Hindi and Urdu film lyrics of the 1940s used the phrase for a dejection that is heavy rather than sharp, closer to exhaustion than to grief. That much can be said of the words in the title. What the song made of them cannot, and is not asserted here.
The Story

Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamara was a Hindi social drama produced in Calcutta in 1945 and directed by Debaki Bose — the New Theatres veteran who had left that studio in 1941 and by 1945 was working on his own. Wikipedia's HFGK-derived index of the year's Hindi films classes it as a Social and names three players, Biman Bannerjee, Kamal Mitra and Padma Devi; myswar and Moviebuff name two of the three and give the production house as Indrapuri Productions. No print of the film is known to survive and no synopsis appears in the standard indexes, so what the songs were written for — who sang them on screen, at what point, in what situation — is not recorded anywhere reachable. This entry states the song's place in the catalogue and stops there.
The Legacy
जिन अभिलेखीय ब्लॉगों ने 1940 के दशक का इतना हिंदी फ़िल्म-संगीत खोज निकाला है — Songs of Yore, Atul's Song A Day — उन्होंने इस फ़िल्म पर कुछ नहीं लिखा।

The song survives as a title and nothing more. It has a page at hindigeetmala, which states that no audio and no video is available for it, and a line in myswar's album listing, which names Columbia Records as the label the film's songs were issued on. The archival blogs that have recovered so much of 1940s Hindi film music — Songs of Yore, Atul's Song A Day — have not written about this film. No cover, remake, award or chart placing is claimed for it here, because none is documented. That absence is itself the point worth recording: it is the ordinary fate of the Calcutta-made Hindi films of the late 1940s, and the catalogue line is now most of what is left of the song.
