By 1945 D. N. Madhok was among the most in-demand lyricists in Hindi cinema, coming off Rattan (1944), whose soundtrack had sold 78-rpm records in unprecedented numbers; Pandit Amarnath was running at a comparable pace, composing for Lahore and Bombay at once. The voice they are both writing for here is the one Amarnath had trained: Zeenat Begum's classically schooled, unforced delivery, which is what a slow declarative lyric of this kind needs. The recording has not resurfaced, so no description of its arrangement is offered.

'Tarana' has two lives. In Hindustani classical music it is a specific form, built on rhythmic syllables rather than on words; in film Urdu and Hindi it had long since softened into a general word for a song or an air, usually one with an edge of ceremony to it. Madhok is using the second sense, and the effect is to frame what follows: this is not a private grief overheard but a piece deliberately offered, a sorrow arranged into a form and handed over. In a film called Kaise Kahoon — how do I say it — a song that begins by announcing itself as a song is doing something pointed. No lyric text is reproduced here.

Kaise Kahoon was directed by Moti B. Gidwani for Pancholi Art Pictures, Lahore, and released on 16 November 1945. Its title — 'how do I say it' — points at withheld speech, and a song that formally presents grief instead of confessing it belongs to that register. Beyond the title, no plot summary of the film survives in any accessible source, and no source records where in the picture this song falls.

The three names on it went three ways: Pandit Amarnath died in 1947 at thirty-five; Zeenat Begum migrated to Pakistan and spent two decades at Radio Pakistan, Lahore; D. N. Madhok stayed in Bombay and went on writing. The film that held their work together did not survive them.
