गुनहगार

Gunehgar (गुनहगार) is the title track and opener of Indian hip-hop artist DIVINE's third studio album of the same name, released on 15 September 2022 as the lead single ahead of the full album's 10 November 2022 release. Produced by American Grammy-winning producer Hit-Boy (known for work with Kanye West, Nas, and Travis Scott), the track was written entirely by DIVINE himself and released via his own label Gully Gang Entertainment in partnership with Mass Appeal India. The song set the tone for an album built around themes of sin, virtue, and self-reckoning, and its official video — directed and produced in-house by Gully Gang — has drawn well over 17 million YouTube views, making it one of the most-viewed tracks from the Gunehgar era.

Hit-Boy's production leans on a minimal, bass-heavy trap beat with sparse percussion hits and dramatic pauses that leave room for DIVINE's rapid-fire Hindi-English verses to dominate. The mix (by Hanish Taneja and David Kim, mastered by Luca Pretolesi) is deliberately stark and hard-edged — closer to American mainstream trap than the more melodic, Bollywood-adjacent sound of DIVINE's earlier work — signalling the album's more introspective, internationally-produced direction.

DIVINE's lyric flips the word 'gunehgar' (sinner) from an accusation into a claim of authenticity — a recurring device in his catalogue where street slang and confrontational Hindi-English code-switching assert identity against judgment. The verses move between boastful street-cred lines and moments of self-aware defiance, embodying the album's stated theme of angels-and-demons duality.

Gunehgar arrived as DIVINE's third full studio album after Kohinoor (2021) and his major-label debut, following his rise from Mumbai's underground gully-rap scene (chronicled in the Zoya Akhtar film Gully Boy, loosely inspired by DIVINE and Naezy). The album — featuring guests like Jadakiss, Russ, Armani White, Noizy, Jonita Gandhi, and Wazir Patar — was framed by DIVINE as his most personal and introspective work, examining fame, guilt, ambition, and healing. The title track's video, shot and produced entirely in-house by Gully Gang, kept the visual identity independent of major-label gloss, consistent with DIVINE's long-standing DIY ethos.

As the lead single and title track, Gunehgar previewed the sonic and thematic direction of DIVINE's most internationally star-studded album to date, one that Rolling Stone India described as an 'introspective, starry and playful' work.
