The Monographजीवनी Biography

Gohar Khayyam Mamajiwala, billed on screen simply as Gohar or "Glorious Gohar," was one of the defining stars of early Indian cinema and among its most powerful women. Born into a Dawoodi Bohra family in Lahore on 19 November 1910, she entered films as a teenager at Bombay's Kohinoor Film Company in the mid-1920s with Baap Kamai (Fortune and the Fools), and rose quickly through silent hits such as Typist Girl (1926) and Gunsundari (1927). In 1929 she co-founded the Ranjit Film Company — later Ranjit Movietone — with director Chandulal Shah, making her a rare actress who was also the co-owner of one of Bombay's biggest studios. With the coming of sound she, like her contemporaries, sang her own songs on screen: her talkie credits include Devi Devyani (1931), Miss 1933 (1933), Tara Sundari (1934), Toofani Taruni (1934) and Barrister's Wife (1935), with songs such as "Koi Kisi Ka Nahin Is Duniya Mein" and "In Dinon Josh-e-Junoon Hai Mere Deewane Ko." After Achhut (1940) she gradually withdrew from acting to focus on running Ranjit, and she remained associated with the studio's affairs for decades. She died in Bombay on 28 September 1985.
